EGY.COM - MAADI

1973 drawing by Maadi artist Essam Azouz
Launched on 17 February 1958 Anbaa Al-Maadi was a weekly newsletter put out by Maadi resident and eminent Egyptologist Hassan Ibrahim Sobhi Bey. Whereas he lived at the semidetached villa (today Belle Epoque Hotel) not far from the Maadi Police Station, from 1953 and for two decades his newsletter was published in a villa on Port Saiid Street where it intersects Road 15, and later at No. 63 Road 13.
Maadi's ranking publisher was often seen walking in Maadi recognized by his slim erect frame, his dark glasses and more importantly his white walking stick, for Sobhi Bey was unfortunately blind.
Sobhi Bey delighted members of the Maadi Sporting Club with vivid lectures on various aspects of Ancient Egyptian traditions and customs. Enamored with Ancient Egypt six of his seven children sported Pharaonic names: Cleopatra, Ramose, A-Ni, Nefertiti, Ti and diplomat-historian Ahmose Sobhi who died on 22 March 1912.
